Mount Waverley Art & Craft Market

As you become a market aficionado, you can often predict how a market will look and the demographic of the shoppers. Mount Waverley Art & Craft Market was one of those that turned out exactly as I thought it would.

Set in the carpark of the Mount Waverley Village Shopping Centre, this popular market was buzzing with locals buying fresh veggies, plants and cakes amongst diners at local cafes and coffee shops.

This is no Farmers’ Market and very much a place where people bring their wares, their produce, their craft and their creations to sell. There were even some people who’d cleaned out the wardrobe and cupboards and brought it along like it was a trash and treasure market.

The food (above) was tasty and the vendor keen for me to sample his selection of nuts and snacks. They were indeed, very nice and bought a packet for my kids.

There are alot of senior people here selling their hand made items. I counted seven stalls displaying their crocheting and knitting skills with creations of baby clothes, blankets, shawls, jumpers and even socks (you don’t see hand knitted socks much these days). Although there wasn’t alot of buyers, the stallholders have a camaraderie that is often borne from coming together on a regular basis for events such as this.

The craftsmanship on the woodwork (above) was very good and the stallholder a delightful man with stories and tales to tell about how he makes his products.

It was also timely that the local Brotherhood of St Laurence was open selling their abundance of books at reasonable prices. (below)

Recommend you bring your own bag or trolley along as this is a no plastic bag market. Also try to bring smaller notes. We all know that the ATM’s dispense $50’s and stall holders are prepared for that but when so many people turn up with larger notes it becomes problematic for them.
