Johnston Street is becoming a hot spot for retro, vintage and secondhand stores that sell a multitude of items that are unique to each store. I discovered this little shop nearly five years ago where I bought myself a hospital bedside table. I now have about four of them sprinkled around the house as kitchen items, bathroom storage and more.
Voted as one of the best second-hand furniture stores in Melbourne by Timeout Magazine, Nook Vintage has the most awesome range of vintage treasures and vintage inspired homewares. This is not a secondhand store as such, more an eclectic mix of those wholesome pieces that we all remember growing up at Nana and Pa’s farm. Whether it’s well-loved work benches or large maps that used to hang in the library when you were 10 – then you’ll find something here. They also have a Warehouse in Clifton Hill which you can read about in the coming weeks.
Some pieces are restored, others are what you see is what you get. Look at everything with fresh eyes and think about another purpose something can be other than what it was designed for.
The owners Rachel and Gary cleverly stock their store with interesting and unique pieces including gift cards, shoes, bags, glass beakers and more. The displays are simple and elegant, with just the right amount of apparent chaos. Bonus – they are just the most delightful people who care about what they stock and are happy to answer questions. If there is something in particular you would like – ask them. If they don’t have it they may be able to source it for you.
If you’re a stylist you’ll be pleased to learn that most of the Nook Vintage stock can be hired which is good for TV shows, Movies and more recently a local band had their album cover photo taken here. I sometimes find the items a little pricey but other times I find them okay.
It’s a delicious pool of odds and sodds that I can immerse myself in and dream up places I can put an item or repurpose it from its original purpose. Children are welcome in the store but make sure they are careful around some of the more delicate items OR some items are stacked or racked and a good bump and there might be a tumble of for example glassware.
